“Slow down, you move too fast. You got to make the morning last.
Just kicking down the cobble stones. Looking for fun and feelin' groovy.
Hello lamppost, What cha knowing? I've come to watch your flowers growing.
Ain't cha got no rhymes for me? Doot-in' doo-doo, Feelin' groovy.
Got no deeds to do, No promises to keep. I'm dappled and drowsy and ready to sleep.
Let the morning time drop all its petals on me. Life, I love you, All is groovy.”
(“The 59th Street Bridge Song” - Paul Simon, Simon & Garfunkel)
Dearest ACM members,
November is a month where Americans typically look forward to great football and settling down to a sumptuous Thanksgiving feast to share amongst family and friends.
Wonderful childhood memories conjure up the glorious smells of Thanksgiving,
the Horn o’ Plenty on the dining room table crammed full of fruits and nuts which we kids would sneak until dinner was served up. The lingering aromas of frash cranberries cooking, stuffing baking with savory herbs in the oven somewhere deep within the loins of the most regal, spectacularly stuffed bird, the bubbling of sweet yams softened with butter and brown sugar, and the dicing of pungent Vidalia onions to incorporate into the thickest, darkest rich homemade gravy.
Amidst all the delightfully noisy clanking of pots, the heavenly intermingled kitchen scents, the roasting, boiling, and baking, were the colorful sights of Sunday best tablecloths, autumn fresh floral arrangements, matched only by the deep auburn reds and brilliant yellows of the crackling leaves floating and falling outside into large crunchy piles, ready for us kids to scoop up and jump in. It was as if all of these smells, noises, sights, and scents were wrapped up into a bundle of anticipation to peak our taste buds for the dinner ritual that awaited our eager lips, always exceeding our already heightened expectations on the perfect American dinner, deserving of the very best of everything: excellent ingredients, wine, music and the perfect mix of witty conversation.

Most of all, the happy sounds of laughter at the dinner table, sharing Thanksgiving with our closest of friends and their family members each and every year. We would alternate houses in New York City and Connecticut, our moms each bringing their special culinary delights baked from the heart and served with loving tenderness to their dearest of friends. Our mothers would chatter away while peeling, cutting, baking, and serving up the most scrumptious feast of the year. Traditional Spanish and American foods were always at our table, as my mother would always include her famous spinach with raisins and pine nuts. After dinner, the children would race around outside, only to settle down later with huge hunks of freshly baked pumpkin pie, piled high with whipped cream, to watch football and the delightfully “scary” old original King Kong movie, a Thanksgiving classic.
At the end of the evening, deliriously satiated, we we would skip down the cobblestone streets to our parked and waiting car, singing the 59th Street Bridge Song by Simon and Garfunkle at the top of our lungs.
The perfect day...
Whether your home is Marbella or the USA, and whether your dinner is a party of few or many,.. (Get in touch to sign up for the new American Club traditional Thanksgiving dinner ...)
...feelings of sharing and, yes, the vibe of “feeling groovy”, transcend one’s place in this world.
Finding a resting spot in one’s heart to exchange the best and most precious with the people we love and whose lives are enriched through cultural celebrations. In communicating, whether overtly or through simple exchange of glance or word, we express our thanks and grace.
Wishing you all a delicious, delightfully groovy! November together.
Happy Thanksgiving ACM!
Festively,
Ann McGeehan
